Artist's Statement
Friends call me a fabric junkie. I guess it's the thrill of the hunt for the right textile to place against another that will evoke exactly the tension or flow or rest point dictated by some inner force. It is this hunt that marks the beginning of a gathering process. Then dream-like images come demanding that I also find line and form by cutting and tearing these fabrics into pieces. Vessels...starry nights...exotic plants...checkered floors...arches, all are images that transport me into spaces that reveal in stages questions, big questions, questions that leave me gasping for answers. (Didn't Someone say that in the forming of a question lies, eventually, its answer?) I am intensely focused during this hunt and manipulation. Even the spark of a colored thread can carry the work forward. A transformation occurs; what was once a disparate pile of fabric now evokes place, event, feeling.
A second transformation takes place as I go over every inch of these textiles again in the process of crafting them into quilt form. I labor to support and understand the underlying vision of the work as I stitch over stitches, design the back layer, address the feel of the piece in the hand and the way it lies against the wall. The pace quickens as installation procedures are defined. The work is titled. It is signed. It is finished.
Meanwhile, textiles used or considered, have spoken in other ways; intuitive drawing has revealed new marks, there are other dreams, other impressions both witnessed and imagined as child and adult that call for exploration. My friends emit a knowing laugh as I coolly tell them it's a layering of ideas and processes. ''No,'' they say, ''it's the hunt.'' Who cares? I'm already rifling through fabric, gathering anew.
