DORLE STERN-STRAETER GALLERY

Dorle is probably the best known European quilt artist. Following the American quilt tradition, her quilts are always made with repeating blocks. However, her block are not the simple square blocks, but complex shapes that are difficult to discern with a quick glance. Her quilts always have a wonderful feeling of depth and space.

Artist's Statement

In sixteen years of my quilt life I have made more than 200 quilts. My work can be divided into three categories:

1978-1982 Curved Quilts
1983-1988 Desert Landscape Quilts in Crazy Technique
1988-1994 Abstract Geometric Crazy Quilts
The Crazy technique I developed when I lived in Saudi Arabia for five years. I had minimal access to fabric and wanted to use small scraps. This technique will stay with me, it is an uncontrolled and yet controlled technique - I can work in little contrast pieces, go slowly from light to dark in color or have light and dark strong contrasts in my design. I always make an exact design on paper and templates.
I love to mix different fabrics, silks, cottons, linen, special effects or motives, hand-dyed or hand painted pieces, old and new fabric. And I can use up every tiny reassured scrap.
I still feel close to tradition, I love the structure of a quilt, divided into repeating blocks, and hand quilting. Also I love to work in series because I can try out all the different possibilities I see in just one block design.
